We Both Work From Home — Which Valley Neighbourhood Gives Us the Most Space and Quiet?
This question comes up constantly now and it's a genuinely useful one to answer properly rather than with the usual neighbourhood tourism response.
The short version: Encino, then Sherman Oaks south of Ventura, then Tarzana if budget is a priority.
What Remote Workers Actually Need
Space for two separate work areas without one person on calls disrupting the other. A yard or outdoor space that functions as a reset during the day. Decent internet infrastructure. Low ambient noise. And enough nearby amenities that you're not getting in the car every time you need coffee or lunch.
Encino
The best overall option for remote working couples with a serious budget. Larger homes, more square footage per dollar than Studio City, genuine quiet on the hillside streets, and a Ventura Boulevard nearby with enough lunch spots and coffee to handle the working day. The tradeoff is that it's slightly less walkable than Sherman Oaks and further from the Westside if you need to go in occasionally.
Sherman Oaks South of Ventura
Strong second option. The hillside streets are genuinely quiet and the homes tend to have outdoor space. You're also close enough to Ventura to walk to a coffee shop for a change of scene, which matters more than people think when you work from home full time. The budget goes slightly less far than Encino but the location is more central.
Tarzana
If budget is a real constraint and you want the most house for your money, Tarzana delivers. Quieter than Sherman Oaks, larger lots, and enough of a remove from the city that it genuinely feels calm. The tradeoff is fewer walkable amenities and slightly more car-dependent daily life.
What to Look For in the Listing
Beyond bedrooms, look specifically for a floor plan where the two main work areas are separated, ideally on different sides of the house or on different floors. Broadband infrastructure in the Valley is generally solid but check the specific address if fibre matters to you.
